Welcoming All Children: Including Children with Special Needs in Your Program

Target program type(s): Group Child Care; Family Child Care; OST
Target audience: Administrators; Teachers

PLC Address: Online

We know all children have needs, and they are all special. The needs of some children are greater or different from those of the “typical” child. A child with special needs is in some way outside the range of what is considered to be typical for a particular age. It may be in the area of cognitive, social, emotional, or physical development. Special needs may be mild to moderate to severe. Their special need may interfere with their ability to learn and develop at the same pace as their typical peers. Whatever the range or source of a disability, children with special needs are more like other children than they are different: they play, make friends, grow and develop. The term “special needs” is a term which may include a staggering array of diagnoses. In this workshop, we will review the services that children with special needs may require, setting appropriate goals, and gaining understanding of the child and the needs of the family.

After completing this course, participants should be able to:
1. Define and describe various types of special needs or disabilities;
2. Discuss the benefits and challenges of including children with special needs in your program;
3. Identify the educational, therapeutic, and support services which children with special needs typically receive;
4. Describe the impact to a family of having a child with significant special needs;
5. Explore resources on various types of disabilities, including their characteristics and manifestations.
