Assessment, Observation, and Documentation of Young Children

This training will discuss the assessment process of young children including observing and documenting the behavior of children. An emphasis on child development, using a variety of observational tools and recording techniques will also be presented. We will discuss the importance of assessment, why we observe and record children’s behavior, what methods to use, how to observe and record children’s behavior, how to use this information to develop children’s goals and plan curriculum. The ethical issues and confidentiality considerations in observing and recording behavior will also be addressed.

Trainer: Dotti McDevitt

Dotti McDevitt, M.Ed.is the Educator Training and Support Manager at Child Care Network on Cape Cod. She is also the founder of Totally Teaching, a consulting, coaching, and training company for early educators and programs. Dotti has been an Early Childhood Educator specialist for over 30 years. She has been a family child care educator, preschool director and teacher and has taught grades Kindergarten through grade 4 in the public schools. She has been the Cape Cod Chapter’s representative on the MAAEYC board for about 10 years and the Conference Committee Co-chair for the past several years. Dotti has five children and 12 grandchildren that keep her busy. She enjoys paper crafting, reading, and camping along the Canal.
