PLC Training: As early childhood educators, we often worry about children honing the math skills needed to be ready for kindergarten and elementary school. What we often do not realize is that the richest, engaging math explorations can be found in nature! In this workshop, we will discuss how going outdoors and bringing nature indoors can lead to authentic, child-led mathematics that goes above and beyond any traditional math lesson plan. It’s time to ditch the worksheets, flashcards, and calendar time-- organic math experiences are waiting right outside your classroom door!
Participants will:
identify what is and what is not developmentally appropriate math explorations for toddlers, preschoolers, and kindergarteners (including diverse learners)
discover ways to use the natural world to encourage mathematical thinking and play
create child-led math experiences that can be linked to state standards from EEC
Facilitator: Vanessa Niro
Vanessa Niro, M.Ed. is a lead forest kindergarten/ nature preschool teacher at Boston Outdoor Preschool Network and runs Roots of Childhood, where she offers resources to inspire all educators to embrace the power of play in nature! She has been in the field of early childhood education since 2013, with experience working and interning in public schools, private and non-profit centers, and Head Start in roles including teaching (infants, toddlers, and preschoolers), mentoring, and coaching educators. Vanessa is particularly experienced in and passionate about nature-based learning, emergent curriculum, mindfulness, and using education as a tool for social justice. Making nature-connection and outdoor learning accessible to all children is at the center of her work and advocacy.
